Donor Rights and Privacy Policy

Donor Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary t the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

I. To be informed of the CURE’s mission, of the way the CURE intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on CURE’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.

III. To have access t the CURE’s most recent financial statements.

IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.

V. To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.

VI. To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.

VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.

VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.

IX. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that CURE may intend to share.

X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

The Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE) values your trust, and we understand the importance of protecting your privacy. We want to make sure that you understand how your information is collected and used by CURE. This privacy statement (“Privacy Statement”) describes what information we collect about you, including when and how we collect it; how we use it; with whom we may share it; and what choices you have regarding our use of your information.

This Privacy Statement applies to all information collected through your communications with the Society, whether electronic, written, or oral; information collected through CURE’s websites that include a link to this Privacy Statement; as well as any other information about you that we may collect offline or receive from third parties (collectively websites, and offline or third-party information are referred to as the “services”). By accessing our Services or providing your information to us, you accept and agree to the practices described in this Privacy Statement.

What types of personal information we collect about you:

When you engage with CURE, we collect a variety of information about you. In general, the type and amount of information we collect on you will depend on how you choose to interact with CURE.

CURE collects information that identifies you as an individual or information which is linked or linkable to you as an individual, which will collectively be referred to throughout this Privacy Statement as “Personal Information” including contact information and demographic information (in some cases).

Contact Information and Preferences We may request contact information such as your name, mailing address, telephone number, mobile phone number, e-mail address, and your preferences for issue interests.

Demographic Information We may request limited demographic information such as your geographic location.

Financial Information CURE appreciates and will accept contributions. If you make a contribution online, you will be asked to submit contact information for verification purposes, and such information will be stored in a secure location. We may use a third-party payment service to process contributions made through the CURE website. However, financial information will not be stored except when it is needed for record-keeping purposes.

Contributions or membership payments to CURE are tax-deductible.

How we collect Personal Information about you:

CURE and its service providers may collect Personal Information in a variety of instances. For example, we may collect information about you in the following circumstances:

Site use: We may collect Personal Information through your use of one of our websites (curepolicy.org, BlackCommunityNews.com). If you sign a petition or provide additional Personal Information, such as a personal experience, in support of a petition, such information may be disclosed to public officials. CURE does not control the manner in which public officials may use Personal Information shared in this way.

Please exercise caution when deciding whether to disclose your Personal Information in public forums. CURE does not control the acts of other visitors to its websites, so please be cautious when deciding to reveal Personal Information on a public area of any site, or in our social media accounts. Please contact us if you believe a visitor to a CURE site is improperly collecting or using information about you or other users.

Contributions or Membership Payments: If you make a contribution or a membership payment to CURE, we will collect Personal Information from you that may include: your name, address, and/or email address so that we can send you thank you for your contribution. We may also collect limited financial information to process your contributions.

Social Media Interfaces: If you elect to connect to engage with CURE using your social media account, certain Personal Information from your social media account may be shared with us, which may include Personal Information that is part of your profile or your friends’ profiles; in addition, if you use a “like” button or use other social media features while visiting our website, those social media companies may collect information about you. Your interactions with social media companies and the use of their features are governed by their privacy policies.

Forms If you decide to complete a membership form or a volunteer form, we will collect information from you in paper or electronic form through our website, or in paper. Personal Information may include your contact information, your position on public policy and cultural issues, etc. Such information is optional but helps to provide you with the best experience and more relevant information. We may also collect your contact information if you join a petition to alert your public policymakers or government action needed.

Other Sources: We may receive your Personal Information from other sources, including, but not limited to, various public policy coalitions, voter rolls, etc.

How we may use your personal information:

We and our service providers may use Personal Information for the following purposes:

Mission: The primary use of your Personal Information is to execute our mission. Your Personal information may be used to stay in touch with you and keep you updated.

Targeted Fundraising: We may use certain information (name, address, telephone number or e-mail information, date of birth, gender etc.) to contact you for the purpose of raising money for CURE, but any such communication will provide you with the opportunity to opt-out of receiving such future communications with each solicitation. If you reengage with CURE without indicting your intent to opt-out, we will re-subscribe your email in order to ensure that you do not miss out on CURE’s updates. You are free to opt-out of fundraising solicitations and your decision will have no impact on your ability to receive news from CURE.

Data Analytics: We also perform data analysist to gain a greater general understanding of how individuals engage with CURE. This analysis can help us improve mission delivery and support.

Other Business Purposes: We may use Personal Information for other business purposes, such as conducting audits, fraud monitoring and prevention, enhancing, improving or modifying our programs and our Sites, identifying usage trends, determining the effectiveness of fundraising campaigns and mission activities, and updating and expanding our business activities.

With your consent: In addition to the other uses described in this section, we may also use your information as you expressly authorize us to do so.

With whom we may share your Personal Information:

CURE will not sell the Personal Information you provide, or we collect through our websites, with the following exceptions:

Third-Party Service Providers: We may need to share Personal Information with third parties that provide operations sites on our behalf (such as website hosting, information technology, and infrastructure, data analytics, email delivery, or other services of an administrative or technical nature.) Your information is shared solely for the purpose of providing such services and is subject to confidentiality obligations.

If You Sign Up as a Member or Volunteer or Through Other Means: CURE is committed to providing timely updates to our users by email. For instance, by signing a petition and providing your email, we are interested in keeping you informed. You will be able to unsubscribe from the email communications you receive from us by following the directions included in each such communication.

Third-Party Charitable Promotions: We may also share your Personal Information with third-party companies that are conducting charitable sales promotions to benefit CURE. You are under no obligation to respond to those promotions, and if you choose not to, the company is restricted from using your contact information for any other purpose.

Donor Privacy: From time to time, CURE may also share donor names and mailing addresses with other non-profit organizations on a limited basis in exchange for limited access to the names and mailing addresses of their constituents. These organizations will not have continued access to your name and address unless you choose to respond to them directly. We do not share email addresses in connection with this list exchange. You, as a donor may, at any time, have your name excluded from any donor list exchange activity. To ask that your name be excluded from list exchange activity or to otherwise change how CURE contacts you, please email us at [email protected]

Social Media: You may share Personal Information with your friends associated with your social media account, to other website users, and to your social media account provider, in connection with your social sharing activity. Please note that any information you post within these public forums or social media pages may become public and may be read, collected, and used by anyone. Please exercise caution when deciding whether to disclose your Personal Information in these forums.

If you Submit Information to Share with Elected Officials: From time to time, CURE may circulate petitions or conduct similar activities online or at specific events, where we will ask you to submit Personal Information to influence elected officials (“Petitions”). This may include contact information, photographs or a personal experience or opinion. We may transmit to elected officials some or all of the Personal Information you provide. However, we cannot control what an elected official will do with your Personal Information.

Your Consent: In addition to the other disclosures described in this section, we may also disclose your information as your expressly authorize us to do so.

Other information collected:

CURE may also collect information that that does not reveal your specific identity or does no directly relate to an identifiable individual, referred to throughout this Privacy Statement as “Other Information,” including browser and device information and Internet Protocol address. Other information also includes information that has been anonymized or aggregated in a manner that it no longer reveals your specific identity.

If we are required to treat other information as Personal Information under applicable law, then we may use and share it for the purposes for which we use and share personal information as detailed in this Privacy Statement.

Browser and Device Information: Certain information is collected by most browsers or automatically through your device, such as your Media Access Control (MAC) address, computer type (Windows or Mac), screen resolution, operating system name and version, device manufacturer and model, language, Internet browser type and version and the name and version of the Sites you are using. We use this information to ensure that our websites function properly.

Internet Protocol Address: Your IP address is automatically assigned to your computer by your Internet Service Provider. An IP address may be identified and logged automatically in our server log files whenever a user accesses our sites, along with the time of the visit and the page(s) that were visited. Collecting IP addresses is standard practice and is done automatically by many websites and applications. We use IP addresses for purposes such as calculating usage levels, diagnosing server problems, and administering the Sites. We may also derive your approximate location from your IP address. We track page hits in the aggregate to track the popularity of pages that people visit. With that information, we can improve the quality of the site.

We will also collect your IP address, along with basic contact information you provide on our website forms, such as the “Contact Us” form, “Newsletter Registration form” and other forms.

Web Server Traffic Pattern Information and Browsing History: We collect standard web server traffic pattern information and your browsing history. General traffic, site usage, browser information, and length of stay information is collected and stored in log files.

Targeted Outreach and Advertising: We may work with third-party service providers to target advertisements and outreach to you based on your preferences or other information, in some cases combining data we collect from you with other de-identified data (such as hashed, non-readable email or postal address). In addition, we may use third-party service providers to display content-specific advertisements to you after you have left our Sites when you go to other websites. These third-party service providers may use cookies, web beacons or similar technologies to tailor advertisements to interests shown by browsing our Sites or other by visiting other websites. We do not control the third-party service providers’ tracking technologies or how they may be used. The collection of your information or use of technologies by third-party service providers is subject to those third parties’ privacy policies, not CURE’s. Uses and Disclosures of Other Information: We may use and disclose Other Information for any purpose, except where we are required to do otherwise under applicable law. In some instances, we may combine Other Information with personal information. If we do this, we will treat the combined information as personal information. For example, we may work with data providers to tailor our communications to you, including fundraising and outreach communications, based on your areas of interest and other information about you. To do this, we may place cookies on your browser and combine IP address or browsing history with other de-identified data (such as a hashed, non-readable email or postal address). We may then communicate with you through mail, email, or other channels.

Our data security protections:

We seek to use reasonable organizational, technical and administrative measures reasonably designed to secure the information to protect personal information within our organization. Unfortunately, no data transmission or storage system can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. If you have reason to believe that your interaction with us is no longer secure, please immediately notify us in accordance with the “How to Contact Us” section below.

Retention CURE retains personal information that we receive as long as necessary to fulfill the purpose (s) for which the information was collected, to provide our services or products, to pursue legitimate business purposes, to enforce our agreements, and comply with all applicable laws.

Your privacy options and access:

Contact Restrictions: If you do not wish to be contacted via email, please contact us with an opt-out request, and we will honor the request in accordance with timelines set forth in applicable law. Please note that if you opt-out of receiving e-mails, we may still send you important administrative messages, from which you cannot opt-out.

To Request a Copy of your Personal Information: Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to obtain confirmation regarding whether CURE processes personal information about you and/or to request access to and receive information about the personal information that we maintain. To make such a request, please email [email protected].

In your request, please make clear what Personal Information you would like to review. For your protection, we may need to verify your identity before implementing your request. We will try to comply with your request as soon as reasonably practicable, consistent with applicable law.

Subject to applicable law, you may also have the right to object to the processing of your Personal Information, and have the information blocked, anonymized, or deleted, as appropriate. Please note that in cases of deletion, limited Personal Information will remain to document the request. The right to access Personal Information may be limited in some circumstances by local law. To exercise these rights, please submit a Data Request Form (link to form).

Subject to applicable law, although CURE makes good faith efforts to provide individuals with access to their personal information, there may be circumstances in which the Society is unable to provide access, including but not limited to: where the information would compromise others’ privacy or other legitimate rights, where the burden or expense of providing access would be disproportionate to the risks to the individual’s privacy in the case in question, or where the information is subject to legal privilege. If CURE determines that access should be restricted in any instance, we will endeavor to provide you with an explanation of why that determination has been made and a contact point for any further inquiries. To protect your privacy, CURE will take commercially reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting access to making any changes to your personal information.

Children’s Privacy: CURE does not knowingly request or collect information from any person under 18 years of age without parental consent. If you believe that your child has submitted personal information to CURE without your consent and you would like this info restricted or removed, please contact us using one of the methods provided in “How to Contact Us” below.

Links to Third-party Websites: Our sites may contain links to third-party websites, whose privacy practices may be different from CURE’s. This Privacy Statement does not address, and we are not responsible for, the privacy, information, or other practices of any third parties, including any third party operating any website or service to which the Sites link. Links to other sites do not imply CURE’s endorsement of the products or Sites or privacy or security practices of those websites. CONTRIBUTIONS

This policy describes our treatment of contributions and payments associated with our events and fundraising campaigns that we receive to advance our charitable mission.

Mission: To fight poverty and restore dignity through the messages of faith, freedom, and personal responsibility.

Charitable Contributions and Other Payments: CURE is a qualified public charity under Section 501-3c of the Internal Revenue Code. Your contribution is considered a charitable donation to CURE and tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. For that reason, charitable contributions that we receive are not refundable. Your gifts are critical sources of our mission funding. For companies and individuals serving as sponsors to specific events, we are grateful and provide additional specifics about your contributions as sponsorship. In addition to contributions, some events are ticketed. All ticket sales to events, such as summits, galas, sports events, are final and not refundable. While you may receive some exchange benefits at the event, such as meals or entertainment, we put these payments towards our mission. Please consult with your own tax advisor regarding the deductibility and treatment of your contributions and other payments.

Charitable Purpose Served by Donation Income: Our outreach is being conducted to fundraise and encourage engagement in the furtherance of CURE’s charitable mission. We have unrestricted use of the contributions and other payments associated with events to serve our mission.

Giving to CURE: Our highest priority is to implement an ethical fundraising policy to guarantee that every dollar is spent wisely. Our call policy reflects that.

We are fully committed to fulfilling donor intent and deeply appreciate the generosity of the public who help us to carry on our mission.
